Holiday Postcard - Summer 2005

Holiday Postcard from North America - 2005

Summer Holidays again!! We flew to Salt Lake City, met up with Becky & Ged (+Pete, JoJo, Chris) and drove south to Moab. Moab is ideally located near many National Parks and we found a lovely spot to stay. Arches NP was our favourite but we also enjoyed Canyonlands, Monument Valley and Dead Horse Point. Amazing 4x4 routes that Paul & Ged wanted to do (Beck and Jane too but not in the "on road" vehicles!!) - we'll have to come back again for that. (point at pictures to see descriptions)

The weather was very hot 35+ for most of the day and evening so drinking plenty of water was essential(see picture). After walking and exploring, we enjoyed cooling off in the afternoon in the swimming pool (Ed learnt to swim!) One of oUr favourite trips was hiking to Delicate Arch to watch the sunset. On the way back, the boys nearly stepped on a Faded Midget Rattlesnake in the dark as we were coming down the mountain. Fortunately it slithered off (after rattling at us)into the dark; leaving us all a little more careful about where we put our feet.
Sophie and Edward for lunch?

After saying goodbye to the Staines Family on their return to Texas, we headed north to Vernal. A nearby town is named Dinosaur after the many fossil finds in the area. We visited a quarry where there are still many dinosaur bones sticking out of the rock. Sophie and Edward were brave to let this Dinosaur give them a lick!! After a couple of nights here we continued north via Park City (outlet shopping and alpine slide) we arrive in the Northern mountains and Yellowstone National Park.

Watching the Old Faithful Geyser

We stayed in West Yellowstone just outside of the Yellowstone National Park. The weather is still hot but bearable. Yellowstone is amazing!! It has all the geology- Hot springs, geysers, mud volcanos as well as wild moose, elk, bears (black and grizzly) and wolf packs. Great scenery, waterfalls and lakes. We then moved on through the Grand Teton National Park to Jackson, Wyoming where we did some hiking in the mountains which are very spectacular here. One day we all walked 7.5 miles down 4000ft.

First night - Ed was too scared to have his photo taken In Jackson we stayed in the "Cowboy Village" and the children got into trouble with the local law - Could do with a couple of babysitters like this! Next door to us were real cowboys who taught us how to lassoo. Sohie found guilty of talking too much

Tonight we're off to watch a real Rodeo and then tomorrow we are travelling to Salt Lake City to stay with friends for the last few days. We hope to post some late photos on here in the next few days.....may get too busy packing, stressing and soon suffering from the jet lag. We have seen so much......elk, buffalo, moose, chipmonks, snake, locusts, bald eagle, bear and wolves (last 2 not in the wild). Beautiful scenery and everything is so big here - their roads, houses, open country, cars (mostly enormous 4x4 trucks), crisp packets, food servings and of course their confidence. We all feel lucky to have had such a great holiday. See each of our favorite parts listed below.
