History of the name "Elvidge"
The name originates from the Middle English personal name Elfegh, Alfeg, Old English Ælfheah, composed of the elements ælf ‘elf’ + heah ‘high’.
The name "Elvidge" also seems to originate from an eleventh century saint - St Alpege who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1004 to 1015. He is sometimes also refered to as St Aelfheah, St Aphage or St Elphege.
It is believed that his name has survived in either the French pronunciation = "ELVIDGE" or the English pronunciation "ELPHICK".
